Deben Entrance Shoal Warning (12th December 2009)

We have just been informed that recent shoal movements in the Deben Entance have made entry into the river difficult.

Reports indicate the entire area has flattened and shoaled resulting in an unpredictable approach. Without appropriate survey information, our recommendation is to make entry proceeding with high caution toward the top of a high flooding tide. As soon as we establish more, details will be posted here.

Deben Entrance sketchmap update released based on survey conducted 09/09/09

Initial examination of the data shows a general reduction in depth with the Mid Knoll shoal and spit moving further south. The spit extending from the Felixstowe shore has also extended further towards the West Knoll buoy. Current buoyage still indicates a good channel although the slightly looser approach to the Mid Knoll might be advisable to avoid the Knolls extending south. Depth over the bar is currently 0.4m at LAT.

Advice remains to not attept entry into the Deben any earlier than half flood and not to attempt entry on the ebb (after high water)

Please be aware of set and drift experienced across the entrance and use familiar pilotage techniques such as use of transits.
